But for any of you with high-powered PC systems (plus, an equally high-powered graphics adapter), Dovetail's just-released CSX Heavy Haul is the best train sim now on the market with truly amazing graphics, plus total out-of-cab, walk-around capability. Don't buy any of the other NV3 offerings at the AppStore: Those are older games or less fully featured games (e.g., TrainzDriver, TrainzSimulator 2, etc.). Happily, the sim seems to run well on my new iMac even at its highest graphics settings:įor OS X users, T:ANE is pretty much the only game in town (literally!). My new iMac came with the upgraded AMD Radeon R9 M395X graphics processor with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR (motherboards with integrated graphics boards need not apply). These sims are processor-hogs and require a pretty fast graphics adapter to run well.
But T:ANE doesn't really run well at all on my late-2012 Core i7 16GB MacBook Pro.
While not as impressive-looking as the new Dovetail offering, T:ANE runs pretty well on my newest iMac, which is a fairly high-powered, quad-core, Skylake 4GHz Core i7 6700K-series + 40GB RAM + 500GB SSD. Thankfully, the basic app comes with two Southern Pacific-roadnamed locos already: An SD40T-2 and an SD45, so I haven't needed to purchase any additional locos yet. Of course, they make their money through in-app purchases, but so far, the only DLC (downloadable-content) I wanted was the Mojave Subdivision route which includes four "sessions," which I purchased in-game for $24.99.
T:ANE is the most-recent train sim for OS X from N3V Games, and is available from the Apple AppStore for only $15.99. I can't run Dovetail Games' much-acclaimed, PC-only TrainSimWorld: CSX Heavy Haul, and benefit from its new Unreal Engine 4 graphics power, but at least I can have some train-sim fun with the OS X version of Trainz: A New Era SP1 (T:ANE). I finally set up my new iMac to be able to run my new train sim.
